West Lafayette Fire Station #1 was built in 1917 making it one of Indiana’s oldest active fire stations. Originally, the building housed the fire department, police department and offices for the mayor and other city officials. The two-story, red brick building had tall, oak trimmed windows, large garage doors, limestone trim, a brass fire pole and 35-foot tower that held a warning siren. Over the years, the original wood was painted, partitions were added and ceilings lowered. The fire fighters have carefully restored the building to its original grandeur in recent years including the old wooden lockers bearing the names and badge numbers of fire fighters from the past.
